You are here

"You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things ... " Hebrews 12:22-24 NKJV "This heavenly Jerusalem is the Church, that is to say the number of all believers throughout the world, having one and the same Gospel, one and the same faith in Christ, one and the same Holy Ghost, and the same sacraments." ~ Martin Luther, Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians (verse 4:26)

You are the Light of the Cosmos

PDF version
I think we are all familiar with Christ's, (God's Chosen Person's), words at the Sermon on the Mount to those who take His words seriously:

Matthew 5:14
"You are the light of the world (kosmos #2889)."
NIV

But have you ever thought of doing your own homework here and looking at the underlying Greek for yourself? Underlying the English word "world" here is hiding the Greek word "kosmos," which has carried from its beginnings a broader meaning to many languages.
There is no injustice done to render Matthew 5:14 as,

Matthew 5:14
"You are the light of the Cosmos (kosmos #2889)."

In my view, this is a little better fitting since "kosmos" has a way of referring to all of Creation. Also, consider how it fits in with such verses as Genesis 1:1-5 that speaks of the Creation of the Cosmos and "Let there be light!" And when we consider how Abraham was invited to look up to the lights of the Cosmos and heard, "So shall thy seed be." (Genesis 15:5), we gain a little better insight as what it means to be a son of Abraham, (Galatians 3:29).
And when one considers the Sun, we confess that the greatest light upon the Earth does not come from the Earth, it comes down from above.

John 8:12
"I am the light of the Cosmos (kosmos #2889)."

And this is love, that we walk after Christ's commandments ~2 John 6
